Board Of Education

West Hartford has an elected seven-member Board of Education which is required by State Statute and Town Charter to oversee public education.

Dr. Overmyer-Velazquez lives with his wife and three young children in West Hartford. He was the Co-President of the Florence E. Smith Elementary School PTO from 2010 to 2011 and worked with the interview committee conducting a search for the school's new principal. He also served as a soccer coach in the West Hartford Co-Recreation Youth League. Dr. Overmyer-Velazquez was a Fulbright Faculty Fellow in 2011 (Chile), and has received several National Fellowships. He has authored and edited a number of books dealing with the history of Latinos as well as the history of Mexico and U.S. migration. Presently serving on the Advisory Board, Freedom University, Athens, Georgia, Dr. Overmyer-Velazquez is fluent in English, Spanish and German, and has studied other languages including Portuguese, French, Hebrew and Yiddish.
