December 2017 / January 2018 News

The fall and early winter seasons are an especially hectic time of year for seniors as well as for the school counselors and secretarial staff. It's hard to believe but it's already December and the holiday season is at our doorsteps!!! We hope your holidays provide you with time to relax and rejuvenate. As this month winds down, we suggest that you confirm your post-high school plans and begin to complete the necessary paperwork. Please remember that December 15th is the deadline to submit any January 15th transcript request forms. Our office does not process materials during the holiday break. In addition to completing your college applications, don't forget to finalize your FAFSA. If you plan takes you down a different path, consider attending the Hall/Conard Gap Year Fair on January 11, 2017. This is an annual one-time only program and an excellent resource for options. Join us that evening at Conard HS!

Wishing you and your families health, happiness, prosperity and peace in 2018!

As progress reports went out Wednesday, December 13, it's a great time for juniors to look at their progress in classes and involvement in extracurriculars and seek support where necessary! Juniors are always welcome to schedule an appointment with their counselor for assistance with accessing resources and/or for any academic or social/emotional support.

PSATs are now available for review on student CollegeBoard accounts. School counselors were also in junior English classes Monday, December 18 to distribute hard copies of student scores and explain their results. Using the score report and College Board website, students are able to see their strengths and areas of need. Khan Academy is a free study resource that can be linked with the College Board to give students personalized studying for the SAT! Contact your school counselor with any questions or concerns.

As the first semester draws to a close, we will move into midterms and then enter third quarter where juniors will be enrolled in a Junior Planning class. During this once-a-week class, juniors will work on their post-secondary planning with school counselors. Students will start a list of potential colleges, open up a Common Application account, research any other post-secondary options, work on a resume, etc. Have a great winter break and a happy new year!

As the new year arrives, know that PSATs were returned the week of December 18th. Please be reminded that sophomore year PSATs are strictly diagnostic and are not shared with anyone outside of Hall (eg. they will never get sent to colleges). Use the score report and the information you can access on the College Board website to see those areas where you are most strong and those where you have the most opportunity for improvement. Also know that Khan Academy is a free resource offered in partnership with the College Board that allows you to start prepping now - at your own pace.

Progress reports were made available on December 13th which means that the end of quarter 2 is only 5 weeks away - and then it's midterm time. Remember, typically, each quarter is worth 40% and midterms are worth 20%. The only grade that eventually winds up on your transcript is the combination of those three grades - making up your semester grade. So, it's important to stay consistent throughout.

Lastly - we have a lot of juniors and seniors who ask the 11th hour question - "What can I sign up for that will look good on my college application?". The answer at that point is "nothing". But - sophomores, if you are not currently active in the life of Hall High School and/or your local community, use the New Year as a time to commit to doing so. Pick one or two clubs/sports/activities you've considered participating in, and make it a goal to follow through and stay with it! Good luck!!

Happy winter! Mrs. Alix and Mr. Suchocki will be completing the Freshman Seminar series the week after your holiday break. We hope that you have learned many skills to assist you with your continued success at Hall High School. Midterm exams are right around the corner (January 17 - 22, 2018). This is a great time to start reviewing your old class materials and meeting with teachers if you are not comfortable with any topics or units. With just a few weeks to go, we are encouraging all of you to finish strong!

We will be distributing your PSAT scores and test booklets once we receive them. After the break (during our final Freshman Seminar class), we will show you how to create a College Board account and link your PSAT scores to Khan Academy so you can receive personalized practice questions and tests.

We hope that you all have a relaxing and restful holiday break and a wonderful New Year. We are looking forward to seeing you in 2018!
