Board Of Education

West Hartford has an elected seven-member Board of Education which is required by State Statute and Town Charter to oversee public education.

Course Weighting

It is the West Hartford Board of Education policy that there be a system of grade weighting in the high schools. Courses designated advanced placement or honors on the transcript will be weighted 0.5 higher than the normal weighting at each grade designation.

Normal Grade Weighting
A = 4
B = 3
C = 2
D = 1
F = 0
P = 0
I = 0

Advanced Placement/Honors Grade Weighting
A = 4.5
B = 3.5
C = 2.5
D = 1.5
F = 0
P = 0
I = 0

The weighted grades in advanced placement or honors courses shall be used in calculating grade point average and in determining class rank. Parents and students shall be so advised through the student handbook at the respective high schools.

Notwithstanding the above, the administration will weight an honors course 0.25 higher than normal instead of 0.5 higher than normal where three levels of a course of study, standard, honors, and advanced placement -- are offered in a specific subject area.

Note: Currently, biology is the only course that 0.25 would be awarded to honors level.
